Fear not, as we have 10 invaluable Clash of Clans tips that will have you drowning in gold, elixir and trophies before you know it! For specific tips on Clan Wars, check out our 10 Clash of Clans: Clan Wars Tips here. Let’s get started!
1. Before going into battle, queue up your next batch of troops to save time
So you have just filled your camps with troops and are ready to wage war. Before you rush off however, make sure to give yourself a head start by queueing up additional soldiers in the barracks for when you return. It can take 5 minutes or more to find a suitable target and complete an attack—precious time that you can take advantage of by training troops while you are away at battle. By saving a few minutes here and there you can fit more attacks into each play session.
2. Shuffle your town layout to suit your current situation
In Clash of Clans there is no penalty for moving your buildings around, so take advantage of this fact by reorganizing your town layout regularly. If you have lots of elixir but no gold, why not move your Elixir Storage into the better defended position and leave your Gold Storage relatively less protected? Or if you are upgrading a Mortar there is no need to protect it, so move it out into the open and put a Gold Mine in it’s place. If you are upgrading defenses you can even use them as part of a trap. Giants will prioritize attacking defenses (even when they are out of action), so place them outside your walls and surround them with Springs or Bombs.
3. Do all your attacking in one big burst
Rather than just performing the odd attack here and there, you are much better off combining multiple attacks into one play session, preferably finishing up by spending as many resources as possible on upgrades. This way you can save resources quickly without constantly losing them again to attackers. Throughout your session, make sure to keep your game open while waiting for the next attack, just keep tapping the screen occasionally as the game will close if left unattended. As long as you keep the game open you are safe from potential attacks.
4. Expose your Town Hall for an easy shield
Whenever you aren’t playing Clash of Clans you will inevitably be open to attacks. Regardless, you should always resist the lure to purchase a shield with gems. A good way to earn a cheap shield is to move your Town Hall into an undefended position. The lure of a few easy trophies may invite a low level attacker who is otherwise unable to take much of your resources. Of course this only works if you don’t mind losing a few trophies, otherwise you will want to put your Town Hall in the most heavily defended position you have. Similarly if you have very little resources to defend there is no reason to sacrifice trophies for a shield that you don’t need.
5. Don’t upgrade your Town Hall before it’s absolutely necessary
The thought of expanding your town with new buildings can be quite tempting, but resist the urge to upgrade your Town Hall early. There are percentage modifiers on how much loot you can get from another player based on your Town Hall. If you attack someone at your level or one above, you will get a 100% modifier (essentially no modifier). However by attacking someone two levels above you will get 125% modifier on their available loot, and at three levels above this jumps to 150%! As you can see it is highly beneficial to keep your Town Hall at a low level for as long as possible. Don’t move up a level until you have maxed out all available upgrades first. The sweet spot for farming is at level 7, where you will occasionally get a huge payday from an easy level 9 or 10 target, while simultaneously protecting yourself from those high level players.
6. Use Revenge wisely
It always hurts to see someone come in and take your hard earned resources, so why not take them back? Apart from the great feeling of exacting vengeance, there is actually a strategic advantage to revenge attacks. Before attacking you can visit your target’s town and wait for the perfect time to strike. Hold off until they have built up lots of resources or until they have unattended mines. Furthermore you can determine their specific strengths and weaknesses and build a customized army of troops that best take advantage of them.
7. Save your gems for a rainy day
Unless you plan on spending real money on gems, make sure you save them and only spend them when necessary. Don’t waste your gems by speeding up builders or swapping for gold and elixir. Your first priority should be saving for a third and possibly fourth builder which will drastically speed up your progress through the game. There are a few ways to earn a big haul of gems, such as a very generous 450 gem reward for reaching 1250 trophies. This alone is almost enough for your third builder. This shouldn’t be too hard even for fairly new players as long as you just focus on battles where you are confident of winning trophies. Once you get the 450 gems feel free to drop back to a lower trophy level where you feel more comfortable. Make sure you also check the achievements list for other great ways to earn gems, such as an additional 250 gems for making it to the Crystal league (2000 trophies).
8. Use Lightning Spells to take out Mortars and Air Defense
Mortars and Air Defenses can quickly wreak havoc from afar on your ground and air troops respectively. One great way to eliminate them is with Lightning Spells. Even high level Mortars can usually be taken out with 2 strong Lightning Spells, which can mean the difference between success and failure. Ideally you should look for targets with other adjacent defenses which you may be able to fully or partially destroy with the Lightning Spell’s wide damage radius. As with all decisions in the game make sure you weigh up the cost against any potential reward. There is no point in wasting tens of thousands of elixir on spells if your opponent doesn’t have much loot to take in the first place.
9. Test for traps with a single goblin
This may seem simple, but it can be one of the most effective Clash of Clans tips when used properly. A well placed Spring, Bomb or Hidden Tesla can decimate your army in no time. So before you send in all your troops to get annihilated, test the surrounding area first with a cheap single unit like a goblin or barbarian. Take advantage of the goblin’s speed and love of gold by placing them in such a way that they will run along a wall potentially springing multiple traps on their way.
10. Protect some of your elixir by queueing Wall Breakers in your barracks
After a long day’s clashing you will eventually have to go to bed, school or work. Unfortunately this means exposing your hard-earned resources to potential attackers. Luckily there is a simple trick that you can use to hide and protect some of your elixir. Wait until all your camps are full and then go to each of your barracks and queue up as many Wall Breaker units (skeletons) as possible. Wall Breakers are the most ‘expensive’ units for the space they take up, so you should be able to spend a lot of elixir this way. Because the camps are already full, the Wall Breakers will sit in the queue and never actually be trained. When you start your next session simply go to the barracks and cancel all of the wall breakers to get a full refund of your elixir. Think of it like hiding your money in a Swiss bank account so nobody can touch it. Just make sure you don’t forget and attack someone, or you will have just wasted a huge amount of elixir on Wall Breakers you didn’t want!
