Have From Software gone soft? First we had last week’s announcement that players who pre-order Dark Souls II will receive an initial in-game advantage in the form of a Black Armor Weapons Pack. Now we have a new trailer titled ‘Hollow Lullaby’ that is decidedly less bleak than one would expect from a Souls game.
Firstly there is the inspirational tone. Hardly very soul-crushing. Then there is the strange choice of going with a gruff American voice-over, which sounded like it would be better suited shouting “OO-RAH” in a Gears of War or Call of Duty trailer. It’s a somewhat odd fit for a series that has typically gone with the ‘Ye Olde’ style English accent which better suits the medieval fantasy theme. Can you imagine this guy doing a trailer for Game of Thrones? I didn’t think so.
Criticism aside, I recently got a chance to play a Dark Souls II demo and can safely say that From Software have most definitely not gone soft. I suspect this is just a case of Bandai Namco Games trying to appeal to a broader market. If that means more people get to enjoy the fantastic Dark Souls series than I am all for it.
Dark Souls II is one of our Most Anticipated Games of 2014 and will be available on March 11 on PS3 and Xbox 360, with a PC version to follow at a later date.
